 Date: 17 – 21 May 2021

Time: 2pm – 9pm (SGT)

Written by Tan Soon Guan

Summary

To help researchers seeking to explore qualitative research, HIPER held our very first Introduction to Qualitative Research Methods Workshop from 26 to 27 July 2021. The workshop was conducted by Ms Pearlyn Neo, our very own HIPER Research Associate from the Social and Behavioural Team, with Dr Rayner Tan, Dr Jane Lim from SSHSPH and Dr Ong Suan Ee.

Over 15 Participants from various sectors (government, private, academia) and countries (both locally and Thailand) participated in this workshop. The two-day workshop was designed to equip participants with the paradigms underpinning qualitative research and the diversity of qualitative methods, such as interviews, focus group discussions and observation methods. At the same time, we aimed to equip participants with practical skills in crafting an interview guide, conducting interviews and analysing qualitative data.

The workshop incorporated a mixture of lecture, breakout and discussion sessions with the instructors to facilitate learning. Overall, workshop attendees found the workshop was extremely helpful for beginners interested in exploring qualitative research. Hear some of the feedback and testimonials given by our participants:

“Fantastic job by the facilitators/organizers for an introductory course on qualitative methods. There was a good variety of lectures, activities/groupwork, and interaction with the lecturers. Very good teamwork as well among the facilitators. I enjoyed the course a lot and will be very helpful in my work. Thank you very much!”

“I really appreciated the high level of audience engagement – the instructors were very friendly and prompted us a lot to contribute to the discussion. They were also very encouraging and facilitated the discussions and hands-on exercises very well. I felt there was a good balance between the exercises and the presentations, which helped me to stay engaged throughout the day. As someone with no prior experience with qualitative research, I found this workshop very helpful and I learnt a lot!”

“I enjoyed the workshop. There was sufficient hands-on practices and the breakout sessions were great in helping me understand and apply the concepts covered in the lectures. The instructors were amazing as well!:

“I highly recommend this workshop for beginners who are interested in qualitative research.”
