WORKSHOP: INTRODUCTION TO QUALITATIVE METHODS

Course outline

In this course, participants will be introduced to the basic ideas behind adopting the use of qualitative research methods in public health. Through hands-on activities and real-life examples, participants will learn how to design a qualitative research study to meet broader research aims and objectives, the different ways to collect data and be equipped with simple data analysis and interpretation skills. Learning outcomes

At the end of the course, participants would be able to:

1. Identify the rationale for using qualitative methods in public health research
2. Identify the procedures for selecting a particular design to meet the study aims and objectives
3. Apply principles of sampling and recruitment of study participants
4. Conduct semi-structured interviews with study participants
5. Conduct focus groups with study participants
6. Manage and analyse data using qualitative research techniques

Pearlyn NEO

Pearlyn is a research associate at Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health. She graduated with a Master of Arts in Sociology from Columbia University and specialises in conducting qualitative research among vulnerable communities. She is currently working on understanding what wellbeing means to Singaporean youths.

Suan is a health systems and qualitative researcher holding concurrent positions at Research for Impact Singapore, the NUS Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health, and the Galen Centre for Health and Social Policy. Her areas of interest are evidence synthesis, policy analysis, qualitative methods, and the intersection of politics and health.

Rayner TAN Kay Jin

Rayner Kay Jin TAN is a postdoctoral fellow at the Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health and Visiting Scholar at Columbia University. His interests include ethnographic approaches to public health, social determinants of health, and the sociology of health and illness.

Jane LIM

Postdoctoral Fellow
Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health, National University of Singapore
Jane is a postdoctoral fellow at the Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health. Her research interests include looking at the drivers of antimicrobial resistance across sectors, and the roles that social networks play in the dissemination of health information.
